As those families move forward and upward, the homes are sold back to First Story to be fully refurbished and provided to a new family. This special program ensures this critical housing opportunity stays in the community for years to come.

This work is made possible through an innovative partnership with Simplicity by Hayden Homes, a homebuilding company within the Hayden Homes brand family. Simplicity, along with industry partners, local businesses, and individual donors, will donate in-kind materials, labor, and gifts to fully remodel the home, ensuring it is truly turn-key for the next First Story family.

To date, these partnerships have opened pathways for affordable homeownership–and changed generational outcomes–for 128 families. Together we are breaking the cycle of poverty—all without a single dollar of government subsidy.

First Story was founded in 1998 as a grassroots way for team members at Hayden Homes to support community members in need.

Now, First Story is an impactful, independent nonprofit offering zero-percent, zero-down, 30-year loans on new and remodeled Hayden Homes that provide affordable homeownership opportunities to families throughout Oregon, Washington and Idaho.

Each First Story home is located within a First Story or Hayden Homes community and comes fully move-in ready, complete with appliances, a washer and dryer, and finished landscaping.

First Story’s Fresh Start homes represent the heart of the nonprofit’s mission: preserving long-term affordable homeownership opportunities and creating generational wealth for families across the Northwest. Fresh Start homes are originally built new by Hayden Homes and provided to one or more previous First Story families.
