We survived last week’s heat wave, but summer is still heating up. Luckily we have some tips to stay cool that are fun and easy to do in your own home!
Backyard Beach Day
Daydreaming of those cooler temperatures on the coast? Snag an inflatable pool to bring the water to you! If you have kiddos, make it a beach day for the whole family by organizing a seashell treasure hunt. For just a few dollars you can get a bag of 50+ seashells on Amazon (pro-tip, shop on Amazon Smile to help support First Story) then head to Home Depot, Target, or somewhere similar, to get a light-weight sandbox and some sand to fill it with! After all, what’s a beach day if everything you own isn’t covered in sand? Bury the seashells and make it a competition to see who can find the most.
Cool down with homemade fruit popsicles! Grab your favorite fruit – watermelon, strawberries, blueberries, peaches, kiwis, you name it! – lime or lemon juice for balance, and sugar or honey to sweeten. Combine all your ingredients in a blender, pour into a popsicle mold (an ice cube tray will also work in a pinch), and freeze for 5-6 hours. If you have popsicle sticks you’ll want to place those into your pops before they go in the freezer, but if not you can simply wrap the bottom of your frozen pop in a paper towel to eat. Enjoy!
All the fun of a water fight, but with the structure of tag. It’s choose-your-own-adventure for what your kids use to tag each other with, but if you don’t want a yard littered with water balloon debris we recommend plastic spray bottles (they’re also less likely to get everyone soaked in a matter of seconds). Wet sponges also make good re-usable “water balloons” and are softer to throw. Just dump them in fresh water when they get dry. For the referees on the side lines, make sure you snag an ice-cold drink and one of those spray bottles to spritz yourself with.
