Three houses, three families, one day. August 20th was one of First Story’s biggest days ever, in our biggest year ever and what a joy it was welcoming our first three families into the charming community of McKenzie Meadows by Hayden Homes.
The key ceremony was the culmination of the extraordinary efforts of numerous people and organizations. First Story, Hayden Homes, NeighborImpact and the City of Sisters collaborated to bring a unique affordable housing option to Sisters. Councilor Michael Preedin spoke on behalf of the City of Sisters and its efforts to facilitate affordable housing, saying, “I couldn’t be more proud for these families. They’re the reason we’re here. This is a goal by the City we have decided to pursue as a community. It can’t happen without all of us in it together.” Each family moved into a 1,058 square foot, three bedrooms, two bath home. The triplex is unique in design, only attached at the garage, the families have no shared walls!
Homeowners went through an extensive application process that required the completion of NeighborImpact’s HomeSource Program which included a homeowner counseling session, and a round of interviews with panel members from all participating organizations. The ceremony was the end of one journey and the beginning of another for the three families.
“There would have been no other option for us to ever own a home in Sisters if it weren’t for this opportunity,” said Debra Donati who has been working and renting in Sisters for decades. Another home went to single father Nathaniel Grimes and his 12-year-old son, Connor. The Grimes are avid frisbee golf players and couldn’t be more thrilled to have their favorite course now within walking distance! Jacob and Jenny Christenson are relieved to have finally have a forever home I Sisters. “This is my absolute dream home,” said one of the Christenson children. Their family of six was nearly forced out of the town where Jacob was born and raised due to skyrocketing home prices.
First Story is excited to announce we are now accepting applications for our next three homes in McKenzie Meadows. The homes will be completed in the spring of 2021. The process is the same as last year, visit our website for information to connect you with NeighborImpact’s HomeSource Program. Virtual classes offered in September and October. Completion of this program is required to apply for a 2021 McKenzie Meadows home.
We are so very #homeproud of these families and the partnerships that made them possible!
