2010-10-06 00:00:00 34 http://firststory.org/news/details/33 Bend, OR - September 27, 2010 – First Story (formerly Hayden Giving Fund), the Northwest’s premier non-profit focused on providing affordable housing opportunities for qualified low income families announced today that one of its seven affordable homes being built in 2010 will be dedicated to Cathi Rupp of Springfield, OR on Friday, October 1^st.

This will be the 30^th affordable housing project that First Story has dedicated to a low-income family in need since its inception in 1998. Shon Rae, First Story Executive Director said, “Even in this tough economy, we will be building and granting seven homes this year. Most people think because we are based in Bend that all of our grant homes are in Central Oregon, however with our new brand and expanded mission, this year we will build and grant homes throughout Oregon, Washington and Idaho”.

“The Rupp’s application for homeownership came to us through HACSA”, stated Hayden Watson, First Story Founder. “Cathi is a single mother raising two kids and working full-time; she also just earned her college degree.   With our model of providing no down, no interest loans, the Rupp family will be able to get into a brand new, high quality 1,007 sq. ft., 3 bedroom, 2 bath home built by Hayden Homes for approximately $550 a month”, said Watson.

Many people have asked why we decided to change our name.  The Hayden Giving Fund was founded within Hayden Homes, which has consistently been our largest strategic partner and financial contributor.  As a result, we have often been mis-labeled as the "charitable foundation" of Hayden Homes.  What most don't realize is that the Hayden Giving Fund has always been a separate, independent 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.  Our new name and brand was launched to bring more clarity to who we are while opening many new possibilities for what we do.

First Story will continue to focus its efforts on fulfilling the belief that housing is fundamental for the ability of low-income families to become more stable and self-sufficient.  The new name is intended to better reflect this belief, while providing additional opportunities to partner with other businesses and housing-related organizations throughout the Pacific Northwest.  "As the programs and service we provide have matured, it became clear to us that the brand needed to evolve as well, and First Story was born out of that need," said Shon Rae, Executive Director of First Story. "While we will continue to remain closely tied to Hayden Homes and their many community involvement efforts, I believe the new name will open up new partnerships, sponsorships and donor opportunities that have not previously existed.  This will allow us to expand the good we do for the people we serve."

The Santoyo's moved to Bend four years ago.  Maria and Roberto have been married for 23 years and moved from Mexico in 1985.  Maria works at High Desert Middle School and Roberto works as a chef at the Shilo Inn.  Their son Saul is a student at Mountain View High School and plays football as a defensive left tackle.  

Though Simplicity by Hayden Homes edged out Adair Homes for the trophy, the efforts of both builders meant that the Santoyo family was in their home by Thanksgiving.
